EDUCATION FOR MENTAL & EMOTIONAL HEALTH

Kamble Vijay Nagnath

Emotional health and Mental health are the two parts of physical health. Both affect each other. Mental experiences like emotions, sensations, feelings and moods have strong subjective qualities like pleasure or pain. Emotions are of two types: positive emotions e.g. love, sympathy, hope, curiosity and negative emotions e.g. anger, hate, grief, fear, etc. Mental health problems can affect the feelings, thoughts, and actions and cause difficulties on daily activities, whether at school, at work or in relationships. A person who has good mental health has good emotional and social well-being and capacity to cope with the changes and challenges. In today’s modern era, rapid industrialization and well developed modern social system, an individual often fails to maintain a balance between himself / herself and his / her social environment. Every person has certain needs, need for affection and love, need for safety and security and so on. An individual tries to establish a balance between her/his needs and her/ his capacity for realizing these needs. As long as this balance is satisfactorily maintained, the person remains adjusted and his mental health is retained. But when this balance is lost she/ he drifts towards maladjustment. The World Health Organization defines mental health as a state of well- being in which an individual realizes her/his own abilities, can cope with normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her/his community.

Experiments in education- Home schooling

Gayatri Reddy, Mumtaz Shaikh

From our study of history, we know that from time to time, humanity goes through momentous changes and every time education takes a huge step forward. These too are times of change and experimentation and amongst the experiments being done in education; the one that needs to be looked at seriously is the phenomena of home schooling. Our present schooling system has not been effective enough to give us the education that we really needed and a survey has rightly caught this emotion saying today’s schooling has resulted in “ greater degrees and lesser jobs, greater sites but lesser social interactions and rising depression and student suicides in India” as cited by the NHRC and SIDH report 2009-10. And hence, many parents are now looking at alternatives like homeschooling. This paper sees the holistic view of the homeschooling phenomena , from what it means to what is the curriculum to its pros and cons and future prospects and finally a few concluding thoughts.

DEVELOPING TRANSFER OF LEARNING APPROACH USING CONCEPT MAPPING FOR SCIENCE IN EIGHTH STANDARD CLASSROOM

CHAVAN KALPANA SWAMIRAO & SANJEEV SONAWANE

Can we use Transfer of learning approach for eighth standard classroom? If so, should we use Concept Mapping for this? We have this curiosity in mind so we can develop Transfer of learning approach using “Concept Mapping” for Science in eighth standard classroom.Apperception theory of transfer is based on the concept Apperception which is a process of relating new ideas to store of old ones. When a student sets himself means self-evolving to learn a subject, a new idea, facts, principles and performing activities or to get experience he learns it by assimilating it with ideas or experiences already acquired and present in his mind in the form of Apperception masses. On the basis of this theory for Science learning we can use Concept mapping. In this paper attempt would be made to describe how Concept Mapping is useful for transfer of learning. KEY WORDS: Transfer of learning approach, Apperception theory of Transfer, self evolving, apperception masses, concept mapping.

The current scenario of adolescent revealed by increased depression, increased suicidal rates, increased drug use is the clear indication of the challenges that adolescents faced. Information overload, mixed messages from media, press, teachers, and family and from society at large add to the confusing scenario of the assimilating young mind. Life Long Learning : Progression from pedagogy to Andragogy then to Heutagogy

Khushal L Mundhe & Surendra C. Herkal

Learning throughout life is a common sensical principle nobody will argue about. What is presently being contested and interrogated is lifelong learning as an educational principle that has to be contextualized in the age of globalization in the 21st century It should be recognized that both “education for all” and “lifelong learning for all” should be for all, that is, for the entire world population. The concept of lifelong learning shifts responsibility for education and learning to the individual, focusing on the development of individual capabilities and the capacity to learn; it implies a shift from traditional education institutions to diverse learning opportunities that are more process and outcome oriented. This Paper suggested that heutagogy is appropriate to the needs of learners in the twenty-first century, particularly in the development of individual capability

Vikas Mane

Right to Education is a revolutionary deviation and an acknowledgement of a maturing democracy, of sensitization of human dignity. So this act is worth a celebration.
Significant Aspects of Right to Education-Limited age-group (6-14) under RTE;The Non-Detention Policy; The issue of financing the Right to Education;Neighborhood Admissions for 25 percent;Monitoring of RTE; Pupil-Teacher Ratio; Socio-economically and physically challenged pupils. These are the issues which may face implementation problems.Under the RTE we should improve the quality and quantity of public educational institutions. In India our development goals make up of quality, quantity and also equality defining the varied socio-economic spectrum of our society7.
Ultimately it can be said that the core of the right to education relates to its substance, which differs from education itself. Effective and transformative education should be the result of the exercise of the right to education, which is a universal human right.

Right To Education Act implemented: Challenges still remain

Bhagyashree Dudhade & Swati Kale

Education is a human right and essential for realization of all other human rights. It is a basic right which helps the individual to live with human dignity. It promotes individual liberty, empowerment and all round development. Yet millions of children all over the world remain deprived of educational opportunities, many as a result of poverty, social customs, political instability, terrorist activities, internal disturbance, wars, defected policies and corruption. Normative instruments of the United Nations and UNESCO lay down international legal obligations for the right to education. These instruments promote and develop the right of every person to enjoy access to education of good quality, without any discrimination. This paper is an attempt to highlight the issue of whether the Right To Education Act has been implemented successfully? are there any challenges to be further dealt with due consideration?

to information” is playing vital role In today’s India. Due to “Sarv Shisha Abhiyan” enough awareness has been created in common people. But still it will be courageous to say that every person has realized the importance of education. The reason behind it, is the mixed response to SSA.In our opinion Right to education is the remedy for the same. Secondly, how and by whom this awareness could be created? The answer is ‘the teacher’. With the different strategies teacher can make people aware of the importance of the education .Government has been conducting several workshops and training programs in ‘ in service’ training sessions.there is a great need to have certain programs or topics In pre service teacher training program. In teacher’s training there are two programs available in India. Those are D.T.Ed and B.Ed. M.Ed is essential qualification for the teacher’s trainer. Role of ICT in Education

Varsha Mahesh Mane

ICT is an exciting subject: it is one which offers a huge range of possibilities to pupils. It is also an area with many pupils naturally engage on a day-to-day basis-via social networking, mobile phones, podcasts, music downloads, gaming, digital photography – integrating the technology seamlessly into their world. The average computer suite has 20-30 computers, printers, a scanner, some digital cameras and a curriculum and school rules which can limit pupils’ use of technology. How, then, can we create opportunities for pupils to engage with some of the more innovative approaches to ICT and to learn about how ICT is now embedded in and shapes the world around us?
Educational visits provide good opportunities for pupils to learn and develop. In figure 9.1, we have divided these benefits into two main areas to show that the learning is not only connected with the subject area, but also is about is about the broader development of individual pupils.
In addition to the benefits in Figure 9.1 , for some disadvantaged pupils this may be their only opportunity to visit a foreign country, to go to a top tourist attraction or to visit a slating rink: all trips which dedicated teachers organize and take their pupils on every year. They can help to foster good relationships between pupils and staff which can be continued into the classroom.
